General Information about Colombia

Home to the sublime Amazon rainforest, the beautiful Caribbean coastline, and vibrant sultry cities, Colombia is one of the most diverse and wonderfully charming destinations in the world.

Recently emerged from the tourism shadows, this off-the-radar travel treasure, perched in the extreme north of South America, offers bountiful attractions that range from pristine golden-white beaches to perfectly-preserved ancient archaeological ruins. Today, the great cities of Colombia are synonymous with modernity and dynamic architecture; a result of the country’s impressive evolution over recent years. Indeed, having once been considered too dangerous for visitors, the country welcomed more than 2.5 million foreign tourists in 2015, and it is becoming increasingly popular with intrepid travellers drawn by an array of thrilling entertainment options and natural wonders aplenty.

THE PRINCIPAL REGIONS OF COLOMBIA

Colombia is comprised of five distinct geographic regions: the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Llanos Orientales, the Amazon, and the Andes. The latter plays host to the sophisticated multicultural capital of Bogotá; a colourful, extremely lively city that serves as a meeting point for people from all over the country. Modern buildings blend in seamlessly with the colonial constructions of old, making for some simply spectacular scenery. This wonderful, sprawling megacity can, and should, form part of any South American travel itinerary, for it offers bountiful activities for those who enjoy history, culture, shopping, and partying.

THE CARIBBEAN

Graced with a coastline 1,600 kilometers long, the Caribbean region holds many remarkable attractions: Cartagena, a city with a tremendously well-preserved colonial atmosphere; Santa Marta, the gateway to Tayrona National Park; Barranquilla, the home of Colombia’s most extravagant Carnival; and San Andrés, a stunning outlying island replete with glorious beaches. There is something here for every traveller.

THE ANDES

Bogotá, Cali and Medellin - the three largest and most economically powerful cities in the country - are all located in this region. The exhilarating Coffee Triangle (Eje Cafetero), consisting of the three departments, Pereira, Manizales, and Armenia, can also be found here and there is no better place to sample the local coffee and become immersed in the country’s breathtaking untouched wilderness.

THE PACIFIC

The Pacific is an untouched travel jewel replete with secluded islands and biological diversity unrivalled across the planet. It has great spots for hiking, culturally rich cities, extraordinary beaches, limpid blue seas perfect for nautical adventures, and fun-loving Cali - the salsa capital of the world.

THE AMAZON

Covering a massive 42% of the country, the Amazon territory is the least populated area in Colombia; a place where awe-inspiring landscapes and incredible wildlife watching opportunities abound, and contact with remote, indigenous communities that still practice ancient cultural traditions is a possibility.

THE LLANOS ORIENTALES

Surrounded by the Orinoco River, the Llanos Orientales region of Colombia also forms part of Venezuela. The vast plains, stretching out in the foothills of the Eastern Andes are home to a variety of ecosystems that include tropical savannas and boundless gallery forests. Caño Cristales and Tuparro National Natural Park are the standout attractions.

HOW TO GET THERE

To get into Colombia, it is important to understand the official rules and regulations regarding visas, or whether simply having a valid passport is enough to get you in. If your idea is to rent a car and journey through the country at your own pace, you must present a driver’s license. Most car rental companies will only accept payment by credit card, and require legal identification and that the driver be 21 years of age of older.

BY PLANE

There are three airports with daily flights arriving into, and departing from, Colombia: El Dorado International Airport in Bogota; Cartagena’s Rafael Nuñez International Airport; and the Jose Maria Cordova International Airport in Medellin.

There are regular connections from Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and many other South American cities.

By Car:
It is also possible to enter Colombia by car from Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil. Whereas in previous years it has not been advisable to travel on roads through this country, it is now perfectly safe to do so and thoroughly recommended for an authentic adventure.
